Gastronomy

The Kvarner cuisine is reminiscent of the Istrian cuisine but is, however, not quite as heavy on the herbs. On the one hand fish and seafood are again dominate in the kitchen, and on the hand there are plenty of hearty-heavy stews, wild-games dishes and lamb. Typical dishes of Kvarner include, for example, squid salad and lamb roasted on spit complemented by sage and lavender, a wide variety of sun-ripened olives, wild berries and aromatic honey. In addition to chestnuts and snails, it is primarily its air-dried ham and a large variety of cheeses, which accounts for the specialties of the Kvarner cuisine. In the mountain regions and on the islands of the Kvarner bay there are ideal conditions for the production of these not surprisingly, wonderful dishes.

Numerous goats give an aromatic milk, which is enriched with wild herbs. Here where you find the salt of the sea, the burning sun and the typical winds, you can find a large assortment of cheeses that blend perfectly with the smoked ham in the region and the local differences brandies.

Opatija’s ideal position at the juncture between sea and mainland is reflected in its gastronomy. Craetive menus mix continental and Mediterranean cuisine, which cannot be imagined without perfectly fresh local organic food. No wonder, then, that Opatija boasts some of the best restaurants on the Croatian Adriatic. Let us mention but a few of the famous local delicacies: the Kvarner lagostines (scampi), fresh from the Kvarner Gulf, wild asparagi, chestnuts and cherries fro Lovran, Istrian truffles.

Heritage

Kvarner covers the area of the mythical Absytrus islands and has unforgettable rivieras: Opatija, Crikvenica, Vinodol and Rijeka. Asides for being famous as the celebrated elite summer destination of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, the coastal Rijeka metropolis is also here. The Kvarner islands are, however, a totally different story. Called the Absytrus islands, after Medea’s brother Absytrus, the islands of Krk, Cres and Lošinj have a rich antique and medieval heritage.

The Apoxiomen should definitely be mentioned here, a very famous bronze statue of an athlete found in 1999 in the sea near Lošinj, which was the work of the Greek sculptor Lizip from the 4th century B.C. The Baška tablet should also be mentioned, the first sculpted memorial of the Croatian language from 1100 found on the island of Krk.

It was placed there by the count’s family, in memory of a girl who drowned after seeing her beloved count Keddeldstadt being pulled to the depths by the raging sea. After 60 years the statue was overthrown by the strong southern wind. The statue was moved under the tree tops, next to the St. Jacob church where the girl prays for the soul of her count.

Discover and experience the magic of this unique island which has enchanted its visitors year after year.

Mali Lošinj is the largest town on the island and the Adriatic islands, and with 7 000 inhabitants the biggest island town in the Adriatic. It is a significant nautical port because it is located on a sea faring route between Istria and Dalmatia, and is one of the main tourist and maritime centres in the Croatian Adriatic.

The island stretches through the whole Kvarner Bay to the south, its characteristic

Rab

The more densely populated southwest coast has pine forests and beaches, while the northeast coast is a windswept region with few settlements, high cliffs and a barren look. In the interior, fertile land is protected from cold winds by mountains, allowing the cultivation of olives, grapes and vegetables. The Lopar Peninsula offers the best sandy beaches.

The cultural and historical highlight of the island is enchanting Rab Town, characterised by four elegant bell towers rising from the ancient stone streets. Even at the peak of the summer season, when the island is overrun with visitors, you still get a sense of discovery wandering its old quarter and escaping to nearly deserted beaches just a quick boat ride away.

It is covered with pine forests and has beautiful sandy beaches, and is well known for its mild climate that differs from the mainland.
