The heart of Dalmatia!! 🙂

Gastronomy

Split Riviera cuisine is part of Mediterranean cuisine, which primarily means a host of dishes made from tasty white fish, cheese, ham (prosciutto) and various meat specialities. Animals that have grazed on pasturelands rich in minerals produce meat with a special aroma. As well as the eating places on Split Riviera, we should not forget to mention local restaurants in the Varoš quarter of Split, in the city centre, with their original specialities.

Split is home to the famous Dalmatinska Pašticada or Dalmatian stew, but also to a delicious river crab stew, savoury cakes such as the aromatic Viška, Forska and Komiška pogača and the famous luganige sausages as well as the Arambašići from Sinj, small cabbage rolls filled with beef and pork. On the island of Hvar you will find renowned wines like Vugava and Plančić and also Smutice, red wine mixed either with sheep’s or goat’s milk.

Heritage

In AD 305, the world’s most powerful man, Emperor Diocletian, was faced with the decision on where to spend the rest of his days. Of all of the known world, he chose to build his home in the heart of the region of Dalmatia, setting the first stones in place for the future city of Split.

Follow in his footsteps by exploring Diocletian’s Palace and a region home to islands, stunning natural landscapes such as Biokovo Mountain and Zlatni Rat beach on the island of Brač, and a wealth of culture that will defy your expectations. The Emperor’s Palace is one of the most significant works of late-ancient architecture, not just for the preservation of original parts and the whole, but also for a series of original architectural forms announcing the new early-Christian, Byzantine and early-medieval art.

The cathedral was built in the Middle Ages by using materials from an ancient mausoleum. Roman churches from the 12th and 13th centuries, medieval forts and gothic, renaissance and baroque palaces are contained within the Roman walls, thus creating a harmonious whole.

Biševo

Islet of Biševo is one of the several Adriatic jewels one can easily fall in love with at the first sight. It is located far out at the open sea, but close enough to the mighty island of Vis which appears as its guardian. Although quite small and almost uninhabited, Biševo radiates some magical attractiveness and prettiness that can not be explained easily.

Its steep coastline hides many fanciful scenes that make up the stunning landscape: crystal clear sea, alluring sandy beaches, intriguing sea caves and sharp cliffs are only the few obvious. There is also a handful of hamlets on the island, mostly situated around three notable coves, Porat, Mezuporat and Salbunara, which are the only convenient anchorages as well. The major, almost abandoned village called Polje is located in the heart of the island and takes visitors back in time, but few of the remaining residents make heady red wine, worth tasting.

The Blue Cave (Modra špilja) is located at the Balun Cove on the eastern side of the island. Though Croatian fisherman have known of the blue cave since ancient times, it wasn’t until 1884 that a (relatively) easy entrance was blasted out with dynamite. Before this small hole in the side of the rock was opened, the only entrance into the cave was to dive underneath the rock wall in just the right spot.

The cave is at its most beautiful between 11 am and 12 pm on a sunny day. The bright blue glowing effect is created when the sun’s rays enter through the water and reflect off the limestone floor of the cave. The bright sun lights up the water, and the glowing ocean illuminates the cave walls a brilliant blue, creating an ethereal glowing blue grotto.

Though not an easy trek, it is a rewarding one – the blue cave is a truly enchanting natural wonder.

Kaštela

Kaštela is a series of seven smaller settlements in central Dalmatia by the Kaštela Gulf. Located northwest of Split, west of Solin (ancient Salona) and east of town of Trogir, enlisted UNESCO site of world heritage. They are part of the Split-Dalmatian county and are treated as a single city – City of Kaštela.

The Kaštela Riviera is a fertile area, about 20 kilometers in length, featuring the first Roman floating docks and 50 places on the long, verdant area, northwest of Split. It is divided into Gornja and Donja Kaštela, and it consists of seven settlements. The Kastela region with its Mediterranean tone, picturesque landscape and unique composition of natural beauty attracted people since prehistoric times. Beaches in Kaštela are concrete, pebble, with sandy areas in the water.

Kaštela can be compared with the most pretty and most interesting places in Europe, the Saxon King wrote in his memoirs early in the 19th century.

Kaštela are picturesque small towns in central Dalmatia near Split, Trogir and Solin. Today’s Kaštela developed around seven small villages which used to be fortresses (Kaštela) and villages with fortified walls beside the coast. Kaštela’s town museum is in the famous stone castle of Vitturi, which was built in the 16th century. It looks as though it has risen up out of the sea, and is connected to the land by a small bridge.

The main part of the castle is the famous Vitturi park, an example of garden culture and one of the most beautiful parks in the whole of Dalmatia. The bible garden in Kaštel Novi, the botanical garden in Kaštel Lukšić and the town museum in Kaštel bear witness to the interesting and rich history of the beautiful fortresses.
